The Leisure Hour - 3 Guys, Brunch, and a Podcast

A few things come to mind when we think of leisure time. For starters, we think of a relaxed state of mind with a glass of tempranillo, a food binging session while watching our favorite trashy reality shows, or a sweet escape into the folds of a Taiye Selasi novel.

So, when we were invited to The Leisure Hour, a podcast that features the insights of Peter Bakke, Kwame Som-Pimpong and JR Watkins, we were excited for the conversation and chance to try the delicious brunch menu carefully curated for the experience. The Leisure Hour is a time of relaxation and reflection combined with music, conversation, and food. The three founding men have a friendship that dates back to their undergraduate days at Davidson College and their bond is evident with their effortless teamwork and communication. On a sunny Sunday, they decide on a cozy location (one of their homes), curate a brunch menu  and a playlist  that is hard to sit still to. After brunch, the podcast recording follows, and let’s just say no topic is off the table!

The Podcast

In the background, a dope playlist that ranged from contemporary hip hop to afrobeat sets the tone for the conversation and food.

The menu spoke for itself - with each guy owning a piece of it.  The drink specialist, Peter Bakke, added his signature touch to the iconic Kir Royale, a welcomed alternative to the traditional brunch mimosa. The caramelized sugar topping of JR Watkins’ Grapefruit Brulee was everything and then some! Finally, Kwame Som-Pimpong’s crepes were delicious as he impressed us with his crepe flipping skills.

With the bubbly flowing, our conversations delved into the social dynamics of dating in modern times, from online dating to ghosting and everything in between. We discussed male and female views on dating and the commonalities that exist between those perspectives. We found ways to debunk antiquated dating notions like the age old concept that a woman is more appealing if she “throws down” in the kitchen.  From what we gathered from the guys, there are many ways to man’s heart - not just food.

In the era of Netflix and chill, some women still want to be courted. “What’s the right balance between going out and staying in?” We asked the guys. With many restaurants popping up in DC every month, there was a consensus that a well thought out foodie adventure is a pleasant date activity. However, we must say, Peter Bakke’s take on the SENSUALITY of cooking together with BAE (Before Anyone Else) was game changing - fellas, listen and take notes.

The vibrant discussion on The Leisure Hour podcast is a must listen! The delicious menu, engaging conversation and relaxed vibes, made our weekend.  Certainly, our time with the gentlemen of The Leisure Hour podcast was enjoyable, but don’t take our word for it, listen to it yourself.
